Blepharospasm (Botox Injections)

Blepharospasm is characterized by frequent blinking or forced uncontrollable closure of both eyelids. Patients may represent the spectrum from being minimally disabled just because of increased blinking to being totally visually disabled because their eyes are closed and cannot be opened except manually with their fingers most of the day. This disorder is classified as dystonia.

Treatment

The treatment for blepharospasm includes injections of botulinum toxin (Botox) into the muscles that surround the eye. This treatment has been shown to be effective 85% of the time. It is, however, temporary and the beneficial effects of the injections tend to wear off in an average of three months. Fortunately, however, injections may be repeated. The Neuro-Ophthalmology Service at Wills Eye Hospital has been performing these injections since 1980 and has the most experience of anyone in this area with this specific type of injection for blepharospasm.
