Hemifacial Spasm (Botox Injections)
Hemifacial spasm is a twitching of one side of the face that usually begins with the eyelids and then extends to the lower face and mouth. This disorder is classified as dystonia.
Treatment
The treatment for Hemifacial spasm includes injections of botulinum toxin (BOTOX) into the muscles that surround the eye. This treatment has been shown to be effective 85% of the time. It is, however, temporary and the beneficial effects of the injections tend to wear off in an average of three months. Fortunately, however, injections may be repeated. The Neuro-Ophthalmology Service at Wills Eye Hospital has been performing these injections since 1980 and has the most experience of anyone in this area with this specific type of injection for Hemifacial spasm.
