Optic Neuritis

Optic neuritis is the most frequent neurologic optic nerve problem in young people. The Neuro-Ophthalmology Service at Wills Eye Hospital was part of a multi-centered National Institute of Health study called the Optic Neuritis Treatment Trial (ONTT). This study investigated 457 patients with optic neuritis and showed that corticosteroid treatment does not affect the ultimate visual outcome. Patients tend to reach the same visual recovery, which occurs in about 90% of people, without treatment. Optic neuritis may be caused by a viral disease or may be associated with a whole host of other medical or neurological problems, but the most frequent association is with multiple sclerosis. However, that does not mean that all patients with optic neuritis have multiple sclerosis.
